Zoom Instamic Pro Plus C: waterproof mini recorder with timecode

Zoom has added the Instamic Pro Plus C to its range of very small recorders. The device measures 1.5 x 1 x 0.5 inches, yet it records on its own, keeps timecode and can also act as a Bluetooth microphone. Two versions are planned: a mono model and a mono/stereo model.

Capsules, recording format and storage

Sound is picked up by a MEMS microphone array. Zoom quotes a frequency range of 40 Hz to 20 kHz and a maximum sound pressure level of 135 dB SPL. Recording is done in 32-bit float, which removes the risk of clipping when levels jump without warning, for example outdoors.

Files are written to 16 GB of internal memory. The built-in battery is rated for 4.5 hours of recording.

Built for rough conditions

The housing resists dust and bad weather and can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes. Zoom positions the recorder for documentary work and for audio alongside action cameras. Three attachment methods are supported:

  • adhesive tape;
  • a magnetic clip;
  • nano suction tape for mounting on almost any surface.

Timecode and wireless features

An internal timecode clock with 2.5 ppm accuracy keeps the recorder in sync with picture. It also supports wireless timecode from Atomos and Tentacle Sync systems. Over Bluetooth, the Instamic Pro Plus C can serve as a microphone for computers and mobile devices. The companion app records video directly and can manage up to 10 units at the same time.

The mono version is priced at $179.99 and the mono/stereo version at $199.99. At the time of the announcement Zoom described both as coming soon to retailers.
