Circuit-bent filter plug-in

Sinevibes Malfunction v3 adds oversampling and a second bend mode

Sinevibes has released version 3 of Malfunction, its filter effect built around a deliberately broken filter model. The plug-in is available for macOS, Windows and Linux at $29, according to CDM.

The idea behind it is a virtual circuit bend. Sinevibes describes the core as a unique experimental algorithm: a filter model whose internal connections have been intentionally tampered with. It can make any audio input sound as if it came from a circuit-bent machine. Version 2 is years old, and version 3 keeps the original filter mod intact.

Oversampling and a second mode

The engine has been reworked. Sinevibes told CDM that the plug-in now features 4x oversampling to make the sound much less harsh while retaining its core "circuit-bendness". It also introduces a second bend scheme that produces an even more fierce and glitchy effect.

The two modes are called A and B, and they sound very different. Mode B is entirely new and has a meatier bass.

CDM's Peter Kirn says the B mode has enough low end to rattle the floor of his studio through subs.

What else is new

  • An input noise gate with adjustable threshold
  • A state variable filter with LP, HP, BP, notch and peaking modes and 1-4X slope
  • Two through-zero LFOs, free or synced, with variable stereo offset

Beyond the usual sine, saw, triangle, square and pulse, the waveform list includes trapezoid, flip, parabolic, cubic, S-curve, exponent, fin, spike and stepped variations divided into thirds and fourths. They allow rhythmic variations as well as shifting in stereo.

The interface and visualizer have been reorganized. Parameters have lag filters, so they can be changed without clicks. Mono and stereo routing is flexible, and the window scales up to 200%.

In a host that splits frequencies, different variations can be applied to different bands, or extra LFOs can be added to more experimental parameters.
