Native Instruments releases Massive XL as successor to Massive X
Native Instruments announced Massive XL on October 27. The synthesizer is the successor to Massive X and is available now as a download from the company's site.
The headline addition is a Preset Generator. It turns an audio reference into a playable Massive XL patch that stays fully editable for further sound design. Stem separation is included, so producers can work from parts of a source recording.
New sound tools
A Mutator and Randomizer produce variations of a sound through guided, similarity-aware mutations. They can also randomize individual modules while keeping chosen elements intact. The Morpher and Animator are improved: movement created with them can be performed, locked, transferred and reused across presets.
Starting point templates bring factory defaults and saveable curves for filters, effects and modulators.
On the sound side, Massive XL has more than 100 new wavetables, including material from the original Massive and classic PPG wavetable content. It also has more than 100 new noise tables. Users can build custom wavetables from imported samples and sample libraries. The built-in effects include Raum, Replika Shimmer and Tape Wobble, and polyphonic aftertouch is supported with compatible hardware.
A clearer view of modulation
The interface is redesigned. Modulators are animated and show modulation in real time. A visible modulator info view identifies what affects any parameter, or reveals every active modulation source in a patch at once.
The modulation environment offers drag-and-drop assignment, sidechain routing, envelopes, LFOs, Performers, Trackers and 16 assignable macros with full host automation support. Context help sits inside the instrument. Undo and redo history, draggable envelope handles, reusable component sub-presets and customizable user banks are part of the workflow upgrades.
"Massive has always been about giving producers the freedom to create sounds that feel uniquely their own," said Tim Adnitt, Senior Director of Product Management at Native Instruments. He said the team focused on helping users reach those sounds faster.
Massive XL costs €199, $199 or £179. An introductory price of €99, $99 or £89 runs from October 27 through December 31, 2026.
Massive X owners can update for €69, $69 or £59, or €49, $49 or £44 during the introductory period. Owners of the original Massive can crossgrade for €129, $129 or £109, or €79, $79 or £69 during the introductory period.
