Musio Studio is a free DAW tied to a 3,700-instrument library

Free digital audio workstations are not rare. Musio says Studio stands apart from other free DAWs in one respect: it ships already connected to a large catalogue of sampled instruments, so a composer can open it and start writing without installing a separate sampler.

Free app, paid library

The app runs on macOS 11 and later (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows 10 and later (64-bit) and Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+, Fedora 32+ and Arch on Intel or AMD). Downloading needs no account. Signing in needs a free one, and that account unlocks 21 free sounds.

The full catalogue is a separate purchase. Musio Complete costs $179 a year and covers 3,700-plus instruments in 126 collections from Cinesamples, ProjectSAM, Soundiron, Audio Ollie and others. Cinesamples has recorded for 20 years; its CineStrings were captured at the MGM Scoring Stage at Sony Pictures Studios.

The browser lets users look for a sound by name or by mood, and the files arrive in the background so work is not interrupted.

Writing, mixing and scoring in one window

Writing, mixing, mastering and scoring to picture sit in one window. There are seven starting templates, and articulations are chosen by click or keyswitch. Dynamics and expression can be drawn in, and notes can be played from the computer keyboard.

The mixer offers four room settings (Room, Studio, Hall, Cathedral), plus EQ, Echo, Chorus, Drive and Filter with 63 presets. Mastering has loudness targets for streaming at -14 LUFS, Apple Music at -16, TV at -24 and a Loud target at -10, with a compressor, de-esser and limiter.

Video can be locked to the project by timecode, with hit marks, streamers and punches. A project can hold up to 512 tracks, and export covers WAV, MP3, stems, MIDI and video. A plugin comes in the same installer for Reaper, Bitwig, Ardour and other hosts, in AU, VST3 and AAX formats depending on the system.

An agent connection, off by default

Musio Studio includes an MCP server. A user can connect an agent such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor and let it load sounds, build templates, set up tracks and shape articulations. The feature is off until it is switched on under Settings > Agents. It runs only on the user's own computer, needs a token, and each agent change counts as one undo step.

Musio says the app itself does not and cannot generate music. Any agent is the user's own.

“Musio Studio is free. The music is yours.” — Michael Patti, founder, Musio

Our view

The software is free, and the full instrument library appears to be sold as a subscription, so the real comparison with other free DAWs depends on how far the 21 free sounds go. Real-world tests on Linux and the agent connection would show how finished the first release is.
