discoDSP adds a built-in acid bassline to TDminator 2.0

discoDSP has released TDminator 2.0, an iOS app for programming, editing and performing patterns for Behringer's TD-3 and TD-3-MO synthesizers. The new version adds an internal bassline engine, so the app also works as an acid instrument without a TD-3 attached.

It costs $9.99 for iPhone and iPad and can also run on compatible Apple Silicon Macs.

The new bassline voice

The engine is modeled on the Devil Fish-style voice of the TD-3-MO and comes with a hardware-style control panel and 13 programs. The panel has cutoff, resonance, envelope, decay, accent, tuning, waveform and volume.

The Devil Fish extras are there as well: accent decay, soft attack, slide time, filter FM, filter tracking, sweep speed, sub oscillator, overdrive and muffler. A monitor menu lets the user hear the internal bassline, the TD-3, both, or neither.

Patterns and MIDI

Patterns are written on a piano-roll grid. A random generator builds 303-style lines locked to a scale, with octave jumps, accents and glides. The grid also has tempo, step count, group and section controls.

A factory bank holds 64 patterns. A DAW or another MIDI source can switch them with Program Change messages or with notes on MIDI channel 16. A change made during playback waits until the current pattern ends.

With compatible TD-3 hardware connected, the app talks over MIDI System Exclusive. It can back up patterns from the synth and send patterns to it. It imports and exports Synthtribe SQS banks, and exports MIDI files for other sequencers.

TDminator runs standalone or as an AUv3 plug-in in hosts such as AUM, GarageBand, Cubasis and Logic. It can serve as an instrument through its own engine, or as a MIDI effect that controls a TD-3 or another compatible synth. Tempo and transport follow the host.
