Universal Audio puts Capitol Studios in a plug-in
Universal Audio has released Capitol Studios, a plug-in that puts audio from your DAW into the Capitol Studios recording space. You pick the room, the mic, the mic position and the gear.
Re-Mic and what it does to a finished recording
The plug-in's Re-Mic mode is singled out as one of its most important features. Audio you have already recorded carries some room sound of its own. Re-Mic lets Capitol Studios add to that ambience or replace it completely. Replacing it leaves a blank canvas to build on.
Two rooms, two consoles
The first choice is the studio. Studio A is a 1,500-square-foot orchestral hall with a cleaner, modern Neve 88RS console. Studio B is a 1,000-square-foot room with a 150-square-foot iso booth, meaning a small isolated space for recording a part apart from the room. It uses the vintage Neve 8068 console, described as having signature warmth and character.
Next comes the mic choice. There are five: the Neumann U48, AKG C12, Neumann U67, Neumann M50 and Sony C-800G. Each studio also offers Live and Tight modes. They simulate the acoustic wooden panels that change how the room decays, so the same space can sound looser or more controlled.
A room with a long record
Capitol Studios Hollywood and Abbey Road in London are among the best-known recording facilities of all time. Capitol has hosted sessions for Ella and Louis (1956) by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Pet Sounds (1966) by The Beach Boys, and Breezin' (1976) by George Benson. Major film scores and video game soundtracks were recorded there as well.
Echo chambers and outboard gear
The package includes the Decca Tree mic configuration and four new echo chamber models. An echo chamber is a dedicated room used to add natural reverb. A range of classic outboard gear rounds it out. Together they make up a complete "source to tape" workflow.
Capitol Studios is available now. Users of Capitol Chambers can get discounts through their UA account.
