Behringer FLOW 4V: $279 field recorder with 32-bit float and timecode
Behringer has announced the FLOW 4V, an all-in-one field recorder for content creators and videographers. It was designed by the German team behind the X32 and WING consoles. The price is $279.
Inputs and recording
Four Midas mic preamps, each able to supply phantom power, feed dual-stage A/D converters. Behringer quotes 138 dB of dynamic range for the preamp stage and up to 142 dB overall. Because of the dual-stage design, no analog gain setting is needed, and gain can be adjusted in post.
The recorder captures up to 10 channels to an SD card or over USB, in 32-bit float or 24-bit fixed point. Each mic, line, USB or Bluetooth source can sit on its own track, while a finished stereo mix is recorded at the same time. After each take, SD recordings can be copied automatically to a connected USB stick.
Working with cameras
- SMPTE timecode can be generated internally, and the aux stereo input can receive SMPTE to sync the internal clock.
- A camera's HDMI CEC signal can start and stop recording.
- A 1/4-20 thread attaches the unit to cameras and tripods.
Mixer, interface and power
An 8-channel mixer offers level, pan, low-cut, tone, high-cut and dynamics, plus automixing on up to 8 channels and a pre-record buffer. With a computer attached over USB, the FLOW 4V serves as an audio interface with 12 inputs and 2 outputs. A touchscreen, physical controls and the FLOW 4V MIX app for iOS and Android over Bluetooth LE handle operation.
Power comes over USB-C, with two recessed ports for redundant supply, or over StageConnect; a power adaptor is included. StageConnect also links the optional FLOW 4VIO, which adds four mic preamps and two headphone outputs. A FLOW 4BAG carry bag is offered for mobile shooters.
