Nikon ZR firmware 1.10 accepts timecode through the mic input
Nikon has issued firmware V1.10 for the ZR, the first update for the camera since its launch in September 2025. Several of its changes touch audio and syncing on set.
Timecode over the 3.5mm jack
The ZR can now take an LTC timecode signal through its 3.5mm microphone/line input. The camera writes that timecode into the video file. Sync is kept even after the timecode device is unplugged. The trade-off is that one of the two audio channels is used for the timecode signal.
Other additions
- RED-style file naming. Clip names now include the reel number, clip number, recording date and a random ID that prevents duplicate names. This helps when the ZR works next to RED cameras such as the KOMODO-X and V-RAPTOR.
- Longer recording. The limit for a single clip grows from 125 minutes to 6 hours. It does not apply to RAW formats: N-RAW, RED NE and ProRes RAW.
- Highlight clipping indicator. In RED NE, a red line on the waveform or histogram marks the clipping point.
- More LUTs. The camera can store 50 custom LUTs instead of 10.
What is still missing
The update does not add several features users have asked for. Among them are false colour, anamorphic de-squeeze, more compressed RED NE options, RED colour science for ProRes and H.265, and more robust H.265 recording.
Nikon also released a minor firmware V5.31 for the Z9. It fixes a case where the focus point could leave the subject right after 3D-tracking or subject-tracking AF started.
