Mutiny TC-A splits one camera mic jack into timecode and audio

Mutiny has introduced the TC-A Timecode + Audio Breakout, a small box for mirrorless and compact cinema cameras whose only audio connection is a 3.5mm TRS mic/line jack. The company names the Nikon ZR, Sony FX3, FX2, FX30 and A7S III among the cameras it is meant for.

How the signal is divided

The TC-A takes a timecode feed from a Deity generator, using its A-OUT mic-level output, or from a Tentacle Sync unit. It records that LTC signal on the camera's left audio channel. The right channel stays free for a real audio source, so a single stereo input carries both sync data and sound.

Because the left channel now holds a high-pitched timecode tone, Mutiny adds a dual-mono headphone adapter to the package. It is a right-angle 3.5mm TRS male plug that feeds a 3.5mm TRS female socket, and it sends only the right-channel audio to both ears. Operators therefore hear the programme sound on both sides instead of the timecode signal in one ear.

Mounting and what comes in the box

The unit can sit horizontally or vertically on a rig, with three mounting holes to choose from. Each kit includes:

  • the TC-A itself, in a BNC or 5-pin timecode version, on an adjustable mounting bracket;
  • a coiled 3.5mm TRS output cable with right-angle plugs at both ends, which runs to the camera's mic input;
  • the dual-mono headphone adapter cable;
  • Allen keys for the locking pin and for mounting the unit.

Both the BNC and the 5-pin timecode versions carry the same price of $140. Mutiny said shipping would begin on November 10.
