AT&T's home security adds Gemini video search and summaries

AT&T says its Connected Life security system now works with Gemini for Home. The company calls it the first home security product to integrate with Google Home Premium.

Cost and who gets it

The Gemini features come only with the professional Connected Life monitoring plan, at $29.99 a month. AT&T presents them as part of its home security offering to new customers.

What Gemini adds

Gemini for Home gives detailed descriptions of events a camera captured. For a delivery, that means who brought the package, how many items and their size, and who else came to the door.

Searchable Video History lets customers ask questions in everyday language about recorded footage. AT&T's examples are “What dug up the yard last night?” and “Who let the dogs out?”

A daily Home Brief wraps up the day's footage and household activity in a single readable summary. AT&T has also added 24/7 continuous recording, which allows review of footage beyond event clips.

Proximity arming and Wi-Fi sensing

Connected Life already locks or unlocks the alarm by itself as the owner nears or leaves home, and the phone stays in the pocket. AT&T is looking at using the Wi-Fi signals already in a home to sense who is nearby or inside, aiming at simpler and safer detection. It gives no date.

Where Google's Home APIs come in

AT&T launched Connected Life last December with Google and Abode. It now draws on Google's Gemini-powered Home APIs, which smart home brands and developers use to put AI features into their devices. ADT, too, has hinted it may bring Gemini for Home to its security systems.

Our take

Searchable video history is the part that could change daily use, since it replaces scrolling through a timeline. The real test is how well the answers hold up on a typical doorstep clip. Whether ADT follows with its own version would show how far this approach spreads among security providers.
