The Pod: a towable cedar podcast studio launches in the UK

A podcast studio on wheels has launched in the English Midlands. It is called The Pod and belongs to Max Media, a production company based just outside Coventry. The trailer is meant for creators, brands and organisations that want to record video on location without giving up a fitted studio.

Who built it

The project is led by James Peacock, a former BBC producer who later worked at Folding Pocket and Platform Media. He teamed up with Piers Roberts, a local carpenter, designer and entrepreneur from the Coventry company Timeless Composites. Building the Airstream-style trailer took more than two years, and the work drew on boat-building methods. The region's motoring history, including nearby Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin, influenced the design.

Peacock said he had wanted such a studio for about a decade. In his words, he "often wished I could just pick up a studio and drop it somewhere."

Materials and size

The shell is made of western red cedar on both sides of an insulation core produced from recycled plastic bottles. The trailer is seven metres long and 2.3 metres wide, and it weighs just over two tonnes. Roberts said the design is patented and that only one will be built.

Equipment

The studio seats four people. Its kit includes:

  • rigged Sony FX30 cameras;
  • Earthworks Ethos microphones;
  • lighting and an internal sound system;
  • its own Wi-Fi and solar power;
  • underfloor heating, a TV, a coffee machine and a fridge.

Where it will go

Max Media plans to take The Pod to events, exhibitions and festivals around the country and rent it to brands and creators. Other planned uses include corporate away days, media training and team-building sessions, plus the company's own podcast and video projects. Peacock said staff have asked to take it to the Tour de France in July, and one person has enquired about having it at a wedding in May. Bookings for 2026 are open through Max Media.
