Ex-Xbox COO Helen Chiang disputes how her exit was handled
Helen Chiang, Xbox's former chief operating officer, has answered the questions around her abrupt exit from Microsoft. In a long LinkedIn post she says she has "serious concerns" about how she was treated, but she gives no reason for her dismissal.
Fairness and accountability
The core of the post is a short passage on fairness and accountability. Chiang writes that standards matter only if they are applied consistently. She says the way those standards were handled in her case troubles her, and she wants that taken seriously.
The post does not dispute that she was fired. It is titled "Clarity is Kindness", a reference to a Wall Street Journal profile of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
What she denies
An earlier report said Chiang was terminated for policy violations. She says that report is inaccurate. Rumours that she leaked confidential information, or that she left to join a competitor, she denies.
She also rejects a list of accusations: discrimination, bullying, harassment, insider trading, embezzlement and other fraudulent activity.
She says she stands by her record, both the results and her treatment of people. Multiple Xbox employees have described her to the reporter as highly respected and as someone with high integrity.
A short memo after 21 years
Chiang had been at Microsoft for 21 years. She became COO in July and left less than two weeks ago. Sharma announced it in a memo that the reporter found surprisingly short.
Chiang ends with a line that leaves the story open: "This is not how I ever imagined my story here would end. And it is not the whole story."
The reporter has asked Chiang whether she plans legal action against Microsoft. Microsoft was asked to comment on the post and did not respond before publication.
Our view
Only one side has spoken in detail, and Chiang's post names no reason for her dismissal. Whether this stays a public dispute depends on two things: whether Microsoft answers her claims, and whether she takes legal steps. Until then, the question of what happened inside Xbox's leadership has no confirmed answer.
