Deity PR-4: six-track 32-bit float recorder for camera or bag

Deity Microphones has announced the PR-4, a compact 32-bit float field recorder with four inputs that writes six tracks. It is sized for mounting on a camera as well as for use in a sound bag. Pre-orders opened on April 14, with shipping expected in mid-May.

Andrew Jones, Global Marketing Manager at Deity, said the design took its cue from analog ENG-style field mixers.

Preamps and inputs

The PR-4 is built around Deity's new ReGain preamps, which offer as much as 60 dB of gain. According to Deity, this is enough to drive gain-hungry dynamic broadcast and podcast microphones without inline boosters. The XLR combo jacks also accept 6.3mm TRS, for sources such as a PA feed. Four channels of AES3 and AES42 microphones are supported.

Backup and timecode

Every recording goes to an SD card and to an internal 64 GB SSD at the same time. Deity says no other recorder under $5,995 has internal SSD backup.

The PR-4 can also send timecode wirelessly to timecode boxes and slates, which Deity calls a first for a field recorder. Any number of compatible devices within 10 metres can sync to it, and a separate wireless group can be chosen in crowded places.

Layout, power and extras

  • XLR inputs on the right side and outputs on the left, following ENG camera tradition.
  • Battery and SD bay reachable without removing the unit from the camera.
  • More than 8.5 hours on a Deity NP-F550 battery, with charging over USB-C or a Hirose-compatible port.
  • LiveHit DeNoiser, VoiceAware Automix for a stereo reference mix, dual independent outputs and control through the Sidus Audio app.

The PR-4 costs $449. An optional metal cage is $59 and the Deity Field Audio Bag (Mini) is $79. Early pre-order buyers at participating dealers receive the bag free while supplies last.
