Cloudvocal updates the FlashTrack FT-15 DSP USB microphone

Cloudvocal has released an updated version of the FlashTrack FT-15, a device that combines a microphone, an audio interface and a DSP processor. Like the original, it is designed to record with a smartphone, tablet or computer.

What prompted the changes

The company says it collected feedback from users. The most common complaints were complicated setups and clipping when recording loud sources. Cloudvocal responded with changes to the physical design and to the onboard signal processing.

Hardware

  • Connection over USB-C without dedicated drivers; all effects, EQ and tone settings are controlled on the device itself.
  • Built-in preamp with up to 46 dB of gain.
  • A BJT (bipolar junction transistor) circuit, which Cloudvocal uses to work around the power limits of USB; the company says it allows SPL handling up to 130 dB.
  • Multi-layer acoustic treatment inside the capsule chamber against internal reflections, and a shock-absorbing structure against vibration from stands and desks.
  • Two USB-C ports, one of which can be used for separate power, plus Bluetooth 5.0 and a 3.5 mm aux input for mixing in backing tracks or instruments.

Processing

The DSP offers EQ, compressor and reverb with presets and detailed settings. An impulse-response (IR) feature emulates two classic microphones, a dynamic and a vintage ribbon, so the FT-15 can switch between three tonal options.

The design follows the same minimalist, mobile-first approach as the first FT-15. The updated FlashTrack FT-15 is available now for $299.
