RØDE RØDECaster Video S: a smaller video podcast console at $499
RØDE has expanded its line of video production consoles with the RØDECaster Video S. It is a smaller version of the flagship RØDECaster Video and uses the same octa-core processor for video and audio. RØDE pitches it at people who produce shows on their own, as well as at video podcasters and streamers. The price is US$499, and the console is open for pre-order with worldwide shipping.
"With the RØDECaster Video S, we're delivering that same power and flexibility in a more compact and flexible format," said RØDE CEO Damien Wilson.
Video side
Up to four video sources can be cut between, along with five scenes that users build themselves. Video inputs include:
- three 1080p HDMI inputs with automatic frame rate conversion;
- one configurable HDMI output for program, preview or multiview;
- a USB-C port for webcams and RØDE USB audio devices;
- up to four NDI inputs and one NDI output over Ethernet, with control of PTZ cameras.
Scenes can stack layers of video, media and graphics. Chroma keying is automatic. An Inspect function previews and configures any input or scene before it goes out. The auto-switching mode changes camera angles depending on who is speaking. With the free RØDE Capture app, an iPhone can act as a wireless camera that uses its front and rear cameras at once.
Audio side
For microphones and instruments there are two Neutrik combo jacks with RØDE's Revolution preamps. Two wireless receivers for Series IV microphones are built in, and Bluetooth is available for remote guests. APHEX processing is available on nine stereo channels. It covers a compressor, EQ, a noise gate, a de-esser and a high-pass filter, as well as the Aural Exciter, Big Bottom and Compellor effects.
Controls, streaming and recording
The front panel carries buttons for the four video sources and the five scenes, four function keys that can be assigned freely, a 2-inch touchscreen and a rotary encoder. The RØDECaster App offers remote control, scene building and deeper settings.
The console streams to YouTube, Twitch and other platforms over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or sends the program to streaming software over USB. It records to an external USB drive or SSD and can keep every video and audio source as a separate ISO file for editing. The RØDECaster Video S is designed and made in Sydney, Australia.
