LEWITT MTP 5: Cardioid Dynamic Handheld for Live Vocals

Austrian manufacturer LEWITT, founded in 2009, has added a handheld dynamic microphone for singing on stage to its range. The model is called MTP 5, and a second version with an on/off switch, the MTP 5S, is offered for talkback use.

Build

The body, mesh and grille are all metal. A protective ring around the head works together with the position of the capsule to limit the effect of cupping, when a singer wraps a hand around the grille. The capsule sits in a rubber suspension to cut handling noise. A windshield is built in and can be removed and washed for hygiene.

Sound and pickup

The MTP 5 uses a dynamic capsule developed for this model. LEWITT says it captures vocal detail while producing less sibilance than many stage microphones. The pickup pattern is cardioid and focused, which is meant to keep the vocal separate from other sources whether the performer uses wedges or in-ear monitors.

Outside the main axis the microphone reduces high frequencies. The aim, according to the maker, is to keep bright instruments such as cymbals from spilling into the vocal channel. LEWITT also describes the high-frequency detail on axis as a strong point of the design.

Availability

At launch both the MTP 5 and the switched MTP 5S were open for pre-order. The maker positions the microphone for touring and stage work thanks to its rugged construction and practical details. The announcement did not include a price or a firm shipping date.
