Insta360 Mic: E-Ink transmitter with microSD 32-bit float

Insta360 has launched the Insta360 Mic, a wireless microphone that sits between the entry-level Mic Air and the flagship Mic Pro. The company calls it its first customizable E-Ink wireless mic with expandable storage. It went on sale on October 22 through the Insta360 store, Amazon and authorized retailers.

The transmitter carries a 1.22-inch six-colour E-Ink display. Users can upload their own images to it, such as a logo, an emoji or a landscape.

Recording and noise control

A microSD slot adds internal recording. With a card inserted, the transmitter records 32-bit float or 24-bit audio at 48kHz. Without a card it still sends sound over Bluetooth or to the receiver. A dedicated AI audio chip handles noise reduction, and the mic offers Auto and Dynamic gain modes plus three voice presets: Regular, Rich and Bright.

The pattern is omnidirectional and the frequency response is 20Hz to 20kHz. Insta360 quotes a range of 400 m. Each transmitter measures 38 by 12.2 mm and weighs 19.4 g with its insert. Connections are Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C and 3.5 mm. Timecode is supported, but not in the US.

Battery and system setup

Battery life is up to 13 hours per transmitter, or up to 34 hours with the charging case. One receiver can work with up to four transmitters, and Mic and Mic Pro transmitters can be mixed. For multicamera shoots, two transmitters can feed four receivers. The receiver plugs into smartphones, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras through the included USB-C smartphone adapter or a 3.5 mm cable.

With Insta360 Direct Connect, the transmitters pair over Bluetooth, no receiver needed, with the X6, X5, Luna Ultra, Luna Pro, GO Ultra and Ace Pro 2. The X6 and Luna models can take two transmitters at once.

In the US, a single transmitter costs $79.99, a transmitter with a receiver $139.99, and two transmitters with a receiver $249.99. UK prices are £75, £129 and £229.
