HyperX Caster boom arm review: toolless setup at $139.99

HyperX sells the Caster, a spring-assisted desk arm for microphones and cameras, for $139.99 through HP. One reviewer tested it together with the HyperX FlipCast, a microphone that ships without any stand, and described an arm that is easy to install and pleasant once tuned, yet slow to balance and expensive for its category.

Design and mounting

Installation needs no tools. The Caster attaches to a desk or table with a single C-clamp, which is the only mounting option supplied; the reviewer noted it should fit most desks but rules out setups where a clamp will not work. The base turns a full 360 degrees, and the arm has three spring-assisted joints that move independently.

  • Standard 5/8-inch mounting thread at the tip
  • 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch adapters included
  • Built-in cable management channels
  • Rated for microphones or cameras weighing up to 2.2lbs

The reviewer had no complaints about the arm's look or construction and called the cable routing simple to use. They also pointed out that the arm is large even compared with other mic arms, which makes it a poor fit for small or cramped desks.

Balancing the joints

Each joint has a tension dial that sets the spring strength, so the arm can be matched to the weight of the attached gear and then moved without further adjustment. In practice the reviewer needed a lot of trial and error to get the tension right, found the dials cheap-feeling and fragile (none broke during testing), and observed that the arm tends to settle into a middle position, making extreme angles harder to hold.

On price, the review notes that mic arms rarely go above $100, and the Caster clearly does. The reviewer's view was that the arm suits buyers who specifically want a premium, toolless mount and have the desk space for it, while cheaper arms do the same basic job for most people. They said they intend to keep using it.
