Rode Wireless Micro Camera Kit Adds a Receiver for Cameras
Rode has introduced the Wireless Micro Camera Kit, a version of its phone-oriented Wireless Micro system that now also works with DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Until this release, the Wireless Micro line was aimed at smartphones; the new kit adds a dedicated receiver that sits on a camera and connects to it through either a USB-C port or a 3.5mm line-in.
What is in the box
The package contains two small transmitters and a receiver that Rode has redesigned for camera use. The receiver carries a 1.1-inch AMOLED screen, which shows battery status and audio settings and includes a level visualiser so the user can watch recording levels while filming. A cold shoe mount attaches it to the camera body, and the receiver switches itself on when the camera is powered up.
- Two transmitters that pair automatically and use omnidirectional capsules
- On-camera receiver with USB-C and 3.5mm outputs and a cold shoe mount
- A separate USB-C receiver for smartphones
- Furry windshields for outdoor recording
- A charging case rated for up to 21 hours of total use
The transmitters rely on Rode's Intelligent GainAssist, which adjusts audio levels automatically as the recording runs. For iPhone owners there is also Bluetooth Direct Connect: through the free Rode Capture app, the transmitters can link to an iOS device without a receiver, so the same set can move between a camera and a phone.
Why Rode made the change
According to Rode, the Camera Kit responds to earlier criticism of the Wireless Micro, which lacked a display, offered limited camera connectivity and had fewer mounting choices. Rode says the display, the wider camera connectivity and the new mounting options are its answer to those points. Rode CEO Damien Wilson described the kit as the next step in the company's aim of making premium audio accessible to all creators.
