DPA DPK2015: a stereo piano kit built on two 2015 microphones
DPA Microphones has released the DPK2015 Piano Stereo Kit, a ready-made set for miking pianos. It pairs two DPA 2015 wide cardioid microphones with mounting hardware made specifically for this instrument.
What the kit is for
DPA says the kit shortens setup time and gives more precise results than other plug-and-play piano solutions. The mounts hold the microphones securely and isolate them from vibration, and they allow a wide choice of positions. According to the company, the kit can be rigged in a few minutes whether the piano lid is open or closed. It is meant to give a natural, balanced stereo image for styles ranging from quiet classical pieces to pop and jazz with large dynamic swings. DPA adds that the bundle is meant to make piano capture simpler without a loss in quality.
Helga Volha Somava, Product Management Director at DPA, called piano miking one of the hardest tasks for engineers and said the kit is meant to work regardless of experience, piano type, genre or environment. She described it as a combination of convenience, flexibility and sound quality.
