Audio-Technica brings back the ATM25 hypercardioid dynamic

Audio-Technica has returned the ATM25 to its catalogue. The company announced the re-release on 2 October 2026 in Stow, Ohio. The ATM25 is a hypercardioid dynamic instrument microphone that first appeared in 1983 and has been used by many engineers and musicians since then.

Unchanged design

The returning model follows the original specification. Gary Boss, senior marketing manager at Audio-Technica U.S., said the company changed nothing and that the microphone is the classic ATM25 made in Japan to the original design.

The ATM25 has an all-metal body with a built-in stand clamp and a multilevel grille. It is designed for close placement on loud sources, and the integrated clamp means it can be mounted on a stand without a separate clip. According to Audio-Technica, users have picked it over the years for its warm, punchy sound and its durability.

Applications

Kick drum is the main target. Audio-Technica also lists:

  • toms;
  • brass and other instruments with a wide dynamic range;
  • electric guitar cabinets;
  • bass cabinets;
  • close-up voiceover and radio broadcast work.

According to the manufacturer, the combination of high SPL handling, a warm and full low-frequency response and the narrow hypercardioid pattern lets the microphone capture loud sources with clarity and definition. The hypercardioid pattern also rejects sound arriving from off-axis.

The ATM25 now returns to the Audio-Technica line-up. The company says the integrated clamp and multilevel grille keep setup simple in the studio and on stage. The announcement did not include price information.
