amaran Cam webcam adjusts connected lights on its own

amaran has announced the amaran Cam, a 4K webcam at up to 60 fps that is built around an Auto Lighting feature. The camera looks at the face of the person in front of it and adjusts connected amaran lights to match. amaran says the whole adjustment takes about 10 seconds.

The function works through the amaran Desktop App. With compatible amaran lights connected, the app analyzes the exposure on the subject's face and changes the lights automatically. For two-light setups there are three looks: Even for clean, balanced lighting, Defined for added shape and depth, and Bold for stronger contrast and mood. At launch Auto Lighting supports up to two compatible lights. amaran plans to cover more complex multi-light setups through later software updates.

Tiffany Cheng, Global Product Marketing Manager at amaran, said: "Lighting is where amaran started, but our goal has always been to make creating easier." She called the Cam "an important step" toward connecting what creators see on camera with the lights that shape their environment.

Camera and zoom

The webcam uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor and an f/1.68 aperture. amaran says it has tuned the image for natural, balanced skin tones. Zoom runs from a 24mm-equivalent wide view to a 50mm-equivalent tighter view with no loss of 4K output, and a digital zoom goes up to 4x. Hybrid autofocus locks on in under a quarter of a second.

Up to four amaran Cams can be connected for several angles, with quick switching between views. Rotating the camera switches it to native 9:16 vertical output at up to 4K60, without cropping.

Software and extras

The webcam works with OBS Studio, Streamlabs, Twitch, Zoom, Teams and other platforms. The desktop app adds Green Screen keying, Beauty and Filters in Virtual Camera mode. Stream Deck integration covers camera control, multi-cam switching and presets.

A magnetic mount attaches to a monitor, and a 1/4-20 thread fits tripods and arms. A physical privacy shutter blocks the sensor. There is a built-in omnidirectional microphone with AI noise reduction. Active cooling supports at least 72 hours of continuous 4K60 operation.

The amaran Cam is on sale now for $249. A streaming bundle adds amaran Verge lighting and the amaran Mic.
