sE Electronics V8: Supercardioid Dynamic Vocal Mic Follows the V7

sE Electronics has released the V8, a handheld dynamic microphone for live vocals. The new range consists of two all-metal handheld versions plus wireless capsules that fit Shure and Sennheiser transmitters. It arrives ten years after the company's first handheld dynamic, the V7, and uses a newly designed capsule called the DMCV8. According to the maker, the capsule is voiced so that vocals sit at the front of the mix without much EQ.

Sound and pickup

sE describes the sound as polished: detailed highs, controlled mids and a rounded low end that stays close to the singer's natural tone. The supercardioid pattern is meant to isolate the voice and allow plenty of gain before feedback on noisy stages.

Construction

  • all-metal body in matte black or graphite grey;
  • spring-steel mesh grille with an integrated shock mount against handling noise;
  • gold-plated XLR connector;
  • a bevelled ring around the grille that stops the microphone from rolling on a flat surface.

The launch coverage describes the V8 as made to survive tour after tour and as keeping vocals at the front of the mix whatever the stage setup or musical style.

In the box are a soft protective case, a mic clip with thread adapter, an internal windscreen and a microfibre polishing cloth.

Wireless versions

The range also includes two wireless capsules built on the V8 design: the MC1 for Shure transmitters and the MC2 for Sennheiser transmitters, each in black or grey.

Price and availability

The wired V8 is available now. The MC1 and MC2 wireless capsules are open for pre-order and were described as shipping soon. Retail listings at launch put the range at about $206 to $234 (£179 to £204, €219 to €249), depending on finish and version.
